Hi Slow Food-ers!

I hope you all had a chance to enjoy some of the warm weather and sun yesterday. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and who volunteered for our table at the Earth Day Street Fair. We brought a lot of food but it was all gone by 1PM 🙂 Below are the three recipes for our delicious goodies:

I have a few quick event announcements coming up:

The Slow Food NYU Eat-In! is scheduled for next Friday, May 6th, times TBD in Washington Square Park. This is going to be an informal potluck (bring food for friends, for yourself, or for no one at all) where we’d like to get all the food-centric and environmental, agricultural, or activist clubs together in once place to show solidarity on campus for food issues and to simply connect people! Keep an eye out for more info in the coming days. If you’d like to get more involved with the Eat-In, or if you know some folks who would be great to invite, email slowfoodnyu [at] gmail [dot] com

Here’s an event co-sponsored by the Student Farmworker’s Alliance at NYU that we should all be proud to get behind:
Join us in demanding rights for all workers this May 1st 2011, by standing in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) this International Worker’s Day. Join us in demanding that Trader Joe’s sign on to a Fair Food Agreement with the CIW to ensure that farmworker rights are met & respected! We cannot stand by idly while Trader Joe’s makes empty promises about addressing the conditions that exploit farm workers while continuing to profit off their sweat and poverty!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!! Today NYU Sustainability is hosting the annual Earth Day Street Fair! Stop by for some free food and a good time, and don’t forget to visit the Slow Food NYU table!

Learn about awesome environmental projects, get involved in NYU Sustainability programs, contemplate your Earth-ly existence, and grab some free dosas from the famous NY Dosa Cart!

Slow Food NYU Earth Day and Earth Week Events!

Hi all!

This Friday is Earth Day! And as usual, the NYU Sustainability is sponsoring the Earth Day Street Fair from 11-3 on Washington Place between Greene Street and Washington Square East. Slow Food NYU will have our own table (exciting!) but WE NEED YOU to help volunteer! If you’d like to join us at the table to hang-out and represent Slow Food NYU OR if you’d like to donate some food, shoot an email to slowfoodnyu[at]gmail[dot]com with the times you’re able to volunteer and/or a dish you’re willing to donate. We’re going to need some slow folks to help out with set-up (10:00-10:30) and break-down (3:00-3:30). It most likely will not take that long…

Also, just FYI: Tomorrow, our friends over at Students Against Fracking are hosting a rally in Washington Square Park:
Stand Up for a Clean Energy Future: Demand a State Wide Ban on Fracking
WHO: The Students Against Fracking coalition will be joined by Reverend Billy and the Earthaluja Choir, Al Appleton, student speakers and performers, NGOs, water system and environmental experts, activists and elected representatives.

Also, HAWK CAM! Two red-tailed hawks have built a nest outside of John Sexton’s Office on the 12th floor of Bobst! Even better, there is a LIVE FEED of the birds. Check it out! Seriously, it’s good stuff.

Finally, check out this new student initiative on campus led by a fellow Slow Food NYU member: Student Farm Worker Alliance at NYU
They’re collaborating on the big May 1st protest for the CIW in front of the Trader Joes in Union Square. Head over to their facebook page to find out more info on why you should think twice before purchasing tomatoes from Trader Joes.

New Leadership and Upcoming Events!

We hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the wonderful weather the past few days. We’d like to take a moment and introduce our new leadership for 2011-2012!

We have a really enthusiastic and diverse group of leaders for next year, we hope you’re all as excited as we are! Also, check our Facebook page if you haven’t already.

Now on to some other exciting stuff. There are a few important dates and events coming up in the next two weeks:

EARTH DAY! We’re going to have a table at the Earth Day fair on Friday, April 22 from 11-3 on Washington Place between Washington Square East and Greene Street. In preparation, we’re having a planning meeting this Thursday (April 14th) at 7:45 on the 7th floor of Kimmel. Stop by to help plan the Slow Food NYU Earth Day festivities! It’s going to be an informal potluck, so feel free to bring food for yourself, everyone else, or none at all.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! Slow Food NYC has a few community garden work days coming up. The first is this Saturday, April 16th from 11-4 at the Ujima Community Garden in Brownsville, Brooklyn. They need all the help they can get to prep the garden/farm for their expanding summer program that works with 100 local kids farming and cooking! On the agenda:
Build Earth Boxes (self-watering containers) from 55 gallon pickle barrels
Remediate and loosen the soil with fresh compost
Plant early crops
Clean and organize kitchen and classroom

If you can’t make it this Saturday and are interested in helping out, don’t fret! There are two other Saturday work days on April 30th and June 4th. Just email us if you’re interested in volunteering on either or both of these days. SFNYC still needs some extra hands on June 4th.

Slow Food NYU looking for leaders!

Are you interested in being a Slow Food NYU Officer? If so, please read on! We need to get in touch asap!
We are holding meetings for interested officers on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 5:30 (7th floor of Kimmel), and a follow-up meeting on Wednesday at 6:15 (7th floor Kimmel).

Why all the immediate meetings, you ask?
Our budget application for 2011/2012 is due this Friday, which means we create next year’s events and apply for funding by Friday. We want to do this TOGETHER with the new officers, because you guys will be implementing the events next year! (we will both be in the city though…yay!). If you end up being an officer, this is really the time to secure it and kick-start your leadership role on campus, and create your collective vision of slow food NYU! We hope that those of you who attend this meeting will have some idea of what you’d like the club to do next year, but no prior knowledge about slow food is required! Just an interest in food in some way!

What if you cannot make the Tuesday and/or Wednesday meeting?
Tuesday’s meeting is to discuss officer positions and determine who will fill the roles. (President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary & Communications Director)
Wednesday’s meeting is to create a (tentative) schedule of events for 2011-2012, and apply for our $1000 budget! You can create the club’s future events!
If you cannot make Tuesday’s meeting but are interested in being an officer, email slowfoodnyu@gmail.com (definitely before tomorrow) and we will work something out!

What if you want to be involved with Slow Food NYU next year but cannot commit to being an officer at this time?
No worries!! There will be plenty of opportunities to step up! Feel free to attend Tuesday’s meeting, though, to see what leadership roles imply and just get to know the people you might be working with.

Chowing For Japan!

On a chilly spring day, Slow Food NYU sponsored a bake sale to raise money for the Save the Children fund for relief work in Japan. It was a success! So many people helped bake delicious goodies, sweet and savory, gluten free and buttery, and even more people came out to buy a snack or lunch plate. We hung out, heard a little harmonica from our friend Nate, and shared the space with Apei fraternity selling wrist-bands for Japan.

Why Save the Children? There are so many funds to give to, some huge and some small. Save the Children is reputable, large, and at the same time specific. It is so important that children resume as close to a normal life as possible following a trauma, because that could potentially have a negative affect on them for the rest of their lives. Save the Children is creating children’s spaces in shelters to create an environment of safety, PLAY, and learning even in times of turmoil. We thought this worth our money!

THANK YOU to everyone who baked and supported us! We raised $290 thanks to you all!

Chocolate Making with Meg

A week after Valentine’s Day, we decided we hadn’t eaten enough chocolate. It was time to learn to make some for ourselves, so we could eat it whenever our hearts desired. This recipe is so easy and stress-free that it is totally doable at home, whenever the craving to eat sweets, or just to zone out and “bake” (well…chocolate make), should strike. Ten of us gathered in the Steinhardt kitchen for a short tutorial, led by the spunky NYU student, (with a pastry certificate from Johnson and Wales) Meaghan Tobin. Thanks to Meg, we had three trays of delicious, salty-sweet, crunchy caramel-chocolate covered pretzels in no time. Thanks to a lovely group of participants, they were all eaten or taken home in doggie bags. This was our first kitchen tutorial, and we had a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who joined us, and we hope to do many more!

Chocolate and Salt Caramel Covered Preztzels
Makes 1 baking sheet of bark

Ingredients:
2 sticks unsalted butter
1 cup light brown sugar
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
Enough pretzels to cover baking sheet
Extra salt to sprinkle on top (optional)

Recipe:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Melt the butter in sauce pan over medium heat .
Add the sugar and stir in. One it boils (bubbles lightly), time for three minutes and remove from heat.
Spread the pretzels on a baking sheet.
Pour caramel evenly over pretzels (it hardens quickly, so don’t pour it all in one spot!).
Put baking sheer in oven for 5-7 minutes.
In the meantime, settle up a double boiler (simmer water in a sauce pan, and set a smaller sauce pan on top of it. Be sure that the bottom of the top sauce pan doesn’t touch the water.)
When water is simmering, pour chocolate chips into top sauce pan, and stir occasionally until melted.
Remove pretzels from oven, and spread the chocolate evenly over them with spatula.
Sprinkle on extra salt if desired.
Let cool in the fridge for about an hour (if you’re in a mad rush for chocolate, put in freezer until hardened!)

Feed your friends. Or don’t, and eat it all yourself. Yum!
